Opticon
Draws on its heritage in barcode scanner manufacturing to offer an integrated solution in store hardware. SE series labels consume energy only during radio transmission and display refresh. The family comprises eight models from the SE-214 to the SE-1160R and uses IEEE 802.15.4-based 2.4 GHz (2405-2480 MHz) communication.
Strengths
- Works within the same ecosystem as the barcode terminals
- One of the few manufacturers that publishes its specifications openly, model by model
- An RGB LED with adjustable frequency and duration on every model
- Battery life of up to 5 years; 2,000 labels per base station on the SE-214
Watch-outs
- IP class and operating temperature are not stated on the product pages - confirm per project
- Software features are basic - not suited to advanced merchandising scenarios
- NFC is not standard; it is offered as an option
VusionGroup
The world's largest ESL manufacturer by unit volume; market share is reported at around 20%. Store Electronic Systems was founded in 1992 and made its first store installation in 1993; in 2014 it merged with the Austrian company imagotag to become SES-imagotag, later becoming VusionGroup. The label line comprises the V100 (black-white-red), V300 (four-colour, seven-colour LED), V300 Waterproof, V300 Freezer (black-and-white, down to -25 °C), V700 (full colour) and VSway series; up to 15 years of battery life is stated for the V-Tag series.
Strengths
- The widest enterprise reference network and field service capacity
- On-shelf availability detection integrated with ESL through the Captana shelf camera
- A retail media revenue model with VUSION Rail LCD strip displays
- A sector reference for print quality in colour e-paper
Watch-outs
- High initial investment and licence cost
- A closed ecosystem - high supplier lock-in
- Weak cost advantage in small-scale deployments
- Figures such as resolution, weight and IP class are not published publicly - request them in writing at the quotation stage

Estimated fields are derived from class averages and are marked individually on product pages; where the two brands differ sharply in how much is estimated, the comparison is unequal by the same degree.
